Linden Labs are probably best known for creating the wild and wacky world of ‘Second Life’, an online 3D environment that everyone touted as the next big thing but in many ways fizzled and became less relevant in recent years.
With their new endeavor, ‘dio‘ Linden Labs is merging two popular activities: photo sharing and role playing games. Users tell stories by uploading their photography; annotating with stories and links; and providing branches from the photo for people to explore further. You could create a walking tour around your block, explore a cathedral on your next visit to Europe or make a virtual game and invite friends to explore.
In many ways it’s similar to the work we explored on the Photosynth team with the idea of connecting an ever increasing number of synths to move from place to place in a seamless and connected manner.
Given that the tools for creation are pretty simple, dio could be something that catches on, but it lacks the simplicity of an instagram or facebook photo upload and I wonder whether people will have the patience to really create a narrative. Still, check it out and see what you think.
