Let’s Get Tactical

WHAT IS IT? Tactus Technologyhas created a tool that looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. While we’re enamored with our amazing mobile devices nowadays, the advent of touch interfaces has taken some getting used to and suffers from some real disadvantages compared to a tactile keyboard. Well, Tactus seems to have created the technology that could change all that. Per their marketing materials:
“Tactus provides a new dimension of user interface with a fundamentally unique solution: application-controlled, completely transparent physical buttons that rise up from the touch-screen surface on demand. With the buttons enabled, users can push and type or rest their fingers as they would with any physical button or keyboard. When the buttons are disabled, they recede into the screen, becoming invisible and leaving a smooth, seamless flat touch-screen with maximum viewing area.”
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
I was skeptical at first, but after looking at the video this appears to be the real deal. Even more interesting is that the tech can be integrated into any device as a transparent overlay with the tactile surface being triggered via software. This means that you could morph the screen into a board, dialpad, camera button or game controller without having to work at a hardware level. Battery drain is estimated to be only 1% of a typical charge. How it would actually integrate with the phone at a hardware and software level is still a work in progress, but I’d be very surprised if we didn’t see this tech emerge as a differentiator in this hot space in the very near future.
